Indian Oil Tanker Reportedly Fired Upon in Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising West Asia Tensions

Tehran: Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply after two Indian-linked vessels were reportedly forced to retreat from the Strait of Hormuz, with one tanker allegedly coming under fire from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

According to maritime intelligence inputs and global shipping monitor TankerTrackers, the incident involved two vessels — Sanmar Herald and Jag Arnav — navigating through one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

The Sanmar Herald, an Indian-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier carrying nearly two million barrels of Iraqi crude, was reportedly fired upon after initially receiving clearance to pass through the strategic waterway. The second vessel, Jag Arnav, was also compelled to reverse course and move westward out of the narrow corridor.

Audio intercepts from Channel 16 radio transmissions suggest a tense exchange between the tanker crew and Iranian forces. In a distress call, the crew of Sanmar Herald can be heard appealing to Iranian authorities after a sudden escalation.

“Sepah Navy! Motor Tanker Sanmar Herald! You gave me clearance… You are firing now! Let me turn back!” the transmission reportedly said, indicating a reversal of instructions followed by the use of force.

The mention of “Sepah Navy” points to the involvement of the IRGC’s naval wing, which plays a key role in securing Iran’s strategic interests in the Gulf region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global chokepoint, handling nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply. Any disruption in this route has immediate implications for global energy markets and maritime stability.

There has been no official response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs so far. It is also unclear whether the vessels sustained damage or if any crew members were injured during the incident.

The development is expected to trigger concern in New Delhi, given India’s heavy reliance on energy imports passing through the Gulf. Diplomatic channels are likely to be activated as global stakeholders continue to monitor the rapidly evolving situation.
