Raisen— Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the government is exploring a plan to procure fruits, vegetables, and millet crops from farmers located near cantonment areas to promote organic farming and boost rural incomes.

Speaking at the Unnat Krishi Mahotsav 2026, Singh said the initiative would ensure a steady supply of fresh and nutritious produce to soldiers while simultaneously supporting local farmers.

“The government is focusing on organic farming and the promotion of millets on a war footing. We are considering engaging farmers near cantonments to supply fresh produce. This will benefit both our जवान and the farming community,” he said.

He added that efforts would also be made to make such produce available through Canteen Stores Department (CSD) outlets under the Defence Ministry, further strengthening market access for farmers.

Encouraging youth participation in agriculture, Singh urged young people to take up farming alongside their primary professions. “The youth can play a major role in strengthening the agriculture sector by embracing farming in whatever capacity possible,” he said.

The minister also highlighted key government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), stating that they have contributed to improving farmers’ welfare.

Emphasising an integrated development approach, Singh said the government has focused on strengthening rural infrastructure, including road connectivity and electricity supply, to support agricultural growth.
