Ladakh Gets Distinct Identity in Aadhaar Records, ‘J&K’ Tag Finally Removed

Ladakh — Nearly seven years after its formation as a separate Union Territory, Ladakh has finally secured its distinct identity in Aadhaar records, with the earlier ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ label now officially replaced.

The long-pending correction was implemented following the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, officials confirmed.

Since the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, Aadhaar records had continued to display ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ in the state field, causing inconvenience to residents. The mismatch often led to issues in using Aadhaar as valid identity and address proof for official purposes.

Taking up the matter, the administration coordinated with the Unique Identification Authority of India to rectify the records. Authorities adopted a centralised mechanism, updating entries based on Ladakh-specific PIN codes verified with the Department of Posts, eliminating the need for individuals to visit Aadhaar centres.

Officials said the correction will streamline access to government and financial services while ensuring accurate representation of Ladakh in official databases.

Residents can now download their updated e-Aadhaar online, while those seeking a PVC card can apply through the UIDAI portal by paying a nominal fee.

The move is expected to significantly improve ease of living and administrative efficiency for people in the region.
