Google rolls out long-awaited Gmail username change feature

California: Google has officially addressed a two-decade-long user grievance by allowing individuals to change their Gmail usernames without creating a new account. The update, announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X (formerly Twitter) on March 31, 2026, marks the first time since the service launched in 2004 that users can move away from legacy or “embarrassing” email addresses while keeping their existing data intact.

Pichai noted in his post that “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it,” highlighting the platform’s shift toward more flexible user identities. The feature began its phased rollout on April 1, 2026, initially becoming available to users in the United States.

How the new system works

The update utilizes an alias-based model that ensures no data loss and maintains continuity for your contacts. Key features include:

  • Primary Identity: Once you choose a new username (the part before @gmail.com), it becomes your primary email identity for outgoing messages.

  • Legacy Support: Your old email address remains connected to your account as an “alternate address.” Any emails sent to the old address will continue to arrive in your primary inbox.

  • Dual Login: You can sign in to your Google Account using either the new or the old username.

  • Data Integrity: All existing emails, Google Drive files, Photos, and linked services remain completely unaffected.

Rules and limitations

To prevent misuse and ensure account stability, Google has implemented several guardrails for the new feature:

  • Frequency Limit: Users can only change their Gmail username once every 12 months.

  • Lifetime Cap: There is a lifetime limit of three changes per account.

  • Availability: The new username must be unique and available; previously deleted usernames cannot be reclaimed by other users.

  • Third-Party Updates: While Google services update automatically, you must manually update your email ID on third-party platforms like banking, social media, and streaming services.

How to change your username

If the feature is active for your account, you can update your ID through the following steps:

  1. Log into your Google Account settings.

  2. Navigate to the Personal Info tab.

  3. Under Contact Info, select Email.

  4. Click on Google Account Email.

  5. If eligible, select the “Change Google Account Email” button and enter your new desired username
