Kerala: Tension flared in Kerala’s Malappuram district after the gunman and driver of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor were allegedly assaulted by a group of individuals, prompting swift police action.
According to officials, the incident occurred on Friday evening near Thiruvali in the Wandoor area when the MP was travelling to attend a campaign event of Congress leader A P Anilkumar. A roadblock at a narrow bridge reportedly led to a confrontation between the MP’s security team and occupants of vehicles ahead.
Police said that when the gunman requested the vehicles to make way for the convoy, a group of five individuals allegedly intercepted the MP’s vehicle and attacked both the gunman and the driver. The complaint was later filed by the gunman, identified as Ratheesh K P, leading to the registration of a case.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody, while efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the remaining accused. Preliminary findings suggest the altercation escalated quickly in the congested stretch, resulting in the assault.
Officials added that security arrangements and the sequence of events are being closely examined as part of the investigation. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of public representatives and their staff during political engagements in the region.
Further details are expected as the police continue their probe into the matter.
