Shanghai (China): A high-level delegation from the Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) is currently visiting Shanghai and Jiangsu province, marking the first such trade mission to China in over five years. The visit, spanning from March 29 to April 4, 2026, signifies a major step in the normalization of bilateral relations following the 2020 military standoff in Eastern Ladakh. This diplomatic and economic thaw follows a series of high-profile meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during the BRICS and SCO summits in 2024 and 2025.
On Tuesday, March 31, the Indian Consulate General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, hosted a Business Roundtable to facilitate interaction between the Indian delegates and leading Chinese corporations, including the Wuxi Technology Development Corporation and financial institutions like HSBC. Mathur emphasized that India’s status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy offers immense potential for international partnerships. The discussions specifically focused on “sunrise” sectors such as New and Renewable Energy (RE), Electric Vehicles (EVs), and advanced information technology, which are central to India’s long-term development goals.
The delegation’s agenda includes visiting major industrial and innovation parks to study China’s clean mobility and battery ecosystems. Beyond bilateral ties, the roundtable also featured representatives from European business groups who shared insights on the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The visit aims to foster resilient global supply chains and encourage B2B collaborations that align with India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision. This renewed engagement is seen as a critical effort to rebuild commercial trust and explore technology partnerships in one of China’s most industrialized regions.
