New Delhi: Several leading Indian institutions, including four Indian Institutes of Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, have secured positions among the world’s top 50 in subject-wise rankings released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

The latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates over 21,000 academic programmes across 1,900 universities worldwide, shows a sharp rise in India’s global academic standing. Indian institutions collectively secured 27 top-50 positions this year, more than doubling last year’s tally of 12.

Among standout performers, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and Indian Institute of Technology Madras featured prominently across multiple disciplines. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi recorded one of the most comprehensive performances, securing six top-50 positions and leading India in key engineering subjects.

The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad emerged as a global leader in Mineral and Mining Engineering, ranking 21st worldwide. Meanwhile, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad also secured the 21st position globally in Business and Management Studies as well as Marketing, marking India’s first-ever entry into the global top rankings for the latter subject.

According to QS CEO Jessica Turner, India’s improved performance reflects not just expansion but growing quality and competitiveness across disciplines, particularly in engineering, technology and business education.

The rankings indicate a broader trend of strengthening research output, academic reputation and international collaboration among Indian institutions, positioning them more prominently on the global education map.
