KKR Face Setback as Harshit Rana Likely to Miss Most of IPL Season After Surgery

Kolkata: The Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a significant setback ahead of the Indian Premier League season, with young fast bowler Harshit Rana expected to sit out the majority of the tournament due to a knee injury.

Rana recently underwent surgery after sustaining the injury during a warm-up fixture against South Africa ahead of the T20 World Cup. He had bowled just one over in that game before being forced off the field, and the issue subsequently ruled him out of the global tournament. At present, he is undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India medical staff, who have yet to determine a clear timeline for his return.

His absence leaves a gap in the pace attack for the three-time IPL champions, who are already contending with multiple fitness and availability concerns within the squad.

Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is also racing against time to regain full fitness after suffering a calf injury, putting his participation in the early stages of the competition in doubt. In another setback, Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman will not be available for selection following directives issued earlier this year, further limiting the team’s bowling options.

To address the shortage, the franchise has brought in Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement. Muzarabani opted to withdraw from commitments in the Pakistan Super League in order to join the IPL squad.

Despite the injury concerns, Harshit Rana recently received recognition at the BCCI Naman Awards, where he was honoured as the Best Emerging International Player—highlighting his rising stature in Indian cricket.

The Kolkata Knight Riders are scheduled to begin their training camp this week and will open their campaign against the Mumbai Indians on March 29 in Mumbai.
