GUWAHATI, ASSAM — Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Friday, March 13, 2026, to kickstart a high-octane two-day visit aimed at transforming the Northeast’s infrastructure. While inclement weather forced the Prime Minister to cancel his physical visit to Kokrajhar, he utilized virtual platforms to inaugurate a suite of projects, delivering a blistering critique of the opposition and reaffirming his “Double Engine” governance model.

The visit, heavy on both symbolism and substance, marks a significant push for the region’s connectivity and energy security. The Prime Minister is scheduled to dedicate projects worth approximately ₹19,680 crore in Guwahati on Friday evening, followed by a ₹23,550 crore project spree in Silchar on Saturday.

Energy and Connectivity: The Core Pillars

A major highlight of the visit is the dedication of the Kopili Hydro-Electric Project, constructed at a cost of over ₹2,300 crore. Located across the Dima Hasao and West Karbi Anglong districts, the project is designed to bolster grid stability and provide reliable “clean energy” to households and industries.

  • Petroleum Expansion: The Prime Minister inaugurated the capacity expansion of Oil India Limited’s Numaligarh-Siliguri Product Pipeline (NSPL). This upgrade is a critical component in boosting the Numaligarh Refinery’s capacity from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA.

  • Railway Revolution: The North East rail network received a massive boost with the inauguration of three new trains and extensive electrification projects. These include the 558 km Rangiya-Murkongselek line (₹420 crore), the 571 km Chaparmukh-Dibrugarh line (₹1,180 crore), and vital sections between Badarpur, Silchar, and Churaibari.

  • Social Justice for Tea Workers: On social media, the Prime Minister lauded the Assam government’s decision to distribute land titles (pattas) to tea garden workers, calling it a “historic step toward justice and dignity.”

Political Offensive: “Congress is a Shop of False Promises”

Addressing the people of Bodoland virtually, the Prime Minister did not hold back his criticism of the Congress party. He alleged that for decades, Bodoland remained a witness to “betrayal” as the previous governments kept the region entangled in false dreams and “paper agreements” that lacked sincerity.

“Congress is a shop of false promises; it gifts four lies with every one promise,” the Prime Minister remarked, contrasting it with the BJP’s “successful model of development.” He invoked the legacy of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, stating that the NDA has consistently worked with honesty since 2003. He further urged the voters to send a clear message in the upcoming elections against “infiltrators,” asserting that there is no room for illegal migrants in the state.

The Road Ahead: Silchar and Beyond

The Prime Minister’s itinerary remains packed. Following the Guwahati events, he will travel to Silchar, where he is set to perform the Bhumi Pujan for projects exceeding ₹23,500 crore on Saturday morning. These initiatives are expected to focus on further enhancing the “Act East” policy, positioning Assam as a central gateway for trade and diplomacy in Southeast Asia.

Local leaders suggest that the massive financial outlay and the Prime Minister’s direct engagement with the Bodoland and tea garden communities are strategic moves to solidify the NDA’s foothold ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle.
