Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir experienced a welcome break from its extended dry spell as several higher altitude areas in the Valley received snowfall on Tuesday, while rains drenched the plains, including Srinagar, officials confirmed.

Regions such as Gurez in north Kashmir and the Sonamarg-Zojila corridor in central Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall overnight. Meanwhile, rain showers continued across the Valley’s low-lying areas through the early morning, bringing much-needed moisture to the region.

This weather activity ended a significant drought period that saw the Valley suffer its seventh consecutive winter rainfall deficit. Between December 2025 and February 2026, the region recorded only 100.6 mm of precipitation, a steep 65% shortfall compared to the seasonal average of 284.9 mm.

December was particularly dry, with just 13 mm of rainfall against a typical 59.4 mm, marking a 78% deficit. January fared slightly better, receiving 73.4 mm of rain versus the expected 95.1 mm, thanks to intermittent western disturbances, but still remained below average. February saw the sharpest drop, with a mere 14.2 mm recorded, a staggering 89% below the norm of 130.4 mm.

Looking ahead, the meteorological department forecasts predominantly cloudy skies accompanied by moderate rain and snowfall in select higher regions until Wednesday. Areas like Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Anantnag may see continued moderate snowfall.

This recent wet spell offers relief to the Valley’s environment and agriculture after months of scarce precipitation and signals a hopeful turn in the season’s weather pattern.
