Solan: A courageous youth in Himachal Pradesh fought off and killed a leopard that attacked him in Sarli village on Monday morning, in a rare encounter between humans and wild predators. The confrontation lasted approximately 12 minutes, leaving the young man with multiple scratches but no life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when Pravesh Sharma, a student at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Arki, was crossing his fields to fetch milk. According to reports, a one-year-old leopard suddenly lunged at him, initiating a fierce struggle.
Despite the sudden attack, Sharma managed to keep his presence of mind, gripping the animal’s jaws and ultimately killing it by striking its neck and head. His uncle, Shyam Lal, noted that leopard sightings had been reported in the area earlier, and villagers had even requested the Forest Department to install a cage to capture the animal.
Residents further reported that the same leopard had attempted to attack a scooty rider around 7:30 a.m., forcing the individual to abandon the vehicle and flee.
Forest officials, led by Divisional Officer Rajkumar Sharma, visited the site immediately and provided Sharma with Rs 5,000 in relief. Officials also inspected the area to assess potential risks and emphasised that the destruction of natural habitats is pushing wild animals closer to human settlements.
“Leopards generally attack humans or livestock at night. That this attack happened in the early morning indicates the desperation of the young animal,” said Sharma. He added that awareness campaigns are regularly conducted in villages to guide residents on coexisting with wildlife, and that capturing leopards safely requires trained personnel due to the complexity of such operations.
The bravery of the youth quickly became a topic of admiration in Sarli village. Local residents, along with teachers and students from ITI Arki, contacted Sharma to check on his well-being and commend his courage in the face of a dangerous predator.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges of human-wildlife conflict in Himachal Pradesh, particularly as leopards and other wild animals venture into inhabited areas due to habitat loss.
