Adoor – Congress MLA from Kerala, Rahul Mamkootathil, resigned on Thursday as state Youth Congress president following an internal party inquiry over a misbehaviour allegation raised by actress Rini Ann George.
The decision came after mounting pressure from political opponents, including BJP and DYFI, who staged protests demanding his resignation as MLA. The controversy escalated when the actress accused “a young leader” of a prominent political party of misbehaviour, triggering widespread speculation.
Addressing reporters at his residence in Adoor, Mamkootathil said he had spoken to Opposition Leader V D Satheesan, KPCC, and AICC leaders earlier in the day. He claimed none of them had asked him to resign. “The actress is my friend, and I don’t believe she meant me. I have not done anything against the law or Constitution,” he said.
Despite defending himself, the MLA stepped down from the party post, stressing that the Congress should not waste time on internal controversies while the state government faced serious challenges. “Hence, I have decided to resign as Youth Congress president. I still believe I have not committed any illegal act,” he stated before refusing further questions.
Satheesan had earlier maintained that the party would not shield anyone found guilty of wrongdoing.
Mamkootathil concluded the press briefing by announcing his resignation and walked back inside his residence, avoiding additional comments.
