New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, to assess the rapidly evolving regional situation and express India’s concerns.
According to official details shared by the Prime Minister, the discussion centred on the deteriorating security environment and the urgent need to safeguard innocent lives. Modi underscored that the protection of civilians must remain paramount as hostilities intensify across the region.
In a statement posted on social media, Modi said he had exchanged views with Netanyahu regarding recent developments and reiterated India’s consistent call for restraint. He stressed that an immediate halt to violence and renewed diplomatic engagement were essential to prevent further instability.
The conversation comes against the backdrop of a sharp escalation involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Recent military actions have significantly heightened tensions, including strikes targeting Iran and the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched multiple missile attacks aimed at Israel and other locations in West Asia, deepening fears of a broader regional conflict.
New Delhi has been closely monitoring the developments, given its strategic ties and significant diaspora presence in the Gulf and surrounding regions. India has consistently advocated dialogue and de-escalation as the only viable path forward.
A day earlier, Prime Minister Modi also spoke with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During that conversation, he condemned attacks targeting the Gulf nation and affirmed India’s solidarity with the UAE during what he described as a challenging period.
India’s outreach to key leaders in the region signals its diplomatic engagement amid mounting uncertainty, with New Delhi reiterating its appeal for calm, stability and an early end to hostilities.
