Chandigarh: Even before the Punjabi edition of the Filmfare Awards takes place in Mohali, the event has become the subject of controversy. Veteran Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi has strongly opposed the invitation extended to Bollywood-Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, questioning the decision of the organizers.
In a video message shared on his social media platforms, Jassi said that while he welcomes cultural programs and award shows, he cannot support the participation of an artist who, according to him, has glorified drugs and alcohol in his music.

“A man whom we have always blamed for pushing our children toward drugs is now being called to perform. This makes me sad. Do we not have enough talented singers and actors left in Punjab who can inspire our youth with better songs?” Jassi asked in his statement.
The singer further criticized the event organizers, including those connected with the Punjab government, saying it was contradictory for the state to run anti-drug campaigns while allowing such performances. “There was a demand for an FIR against one of his songs recently. On one hand, the government says it is fighting a battle against drugs, and on the other hand, the same person is invited to perform. What is the compulsion behind this?” Jassi remarked.
He also urged Punjab’s Chief Minister and Director General of Police to reconsider the decision, emphasizing that leaders in Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru may not fully grasp the sentiments of Punjab, but those in the state should.
Rejecting claims that his opposition stems from personal rivalry, Jassi clarified that he was taking a stand for Punjab’s future generations. “If I have to choose between my friends and Punjab, I will always choose Punjab. This is not about individuals—it is about protecting our children from harmful influences,” he said.
The controversy has sparked debate across social media, with many users echoing Jassi’s concerns while others defended Honey Singh’s inclusion, saying music is a matter of personal choice.
The Punjabi Filmfare Awards are scheduled to be held in Mohali later this month, and all eyes are now on whether the organizers or the government respond to Jassi’s appeal.
