New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday disposed of a petition challenging the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat after filmmaker Neeraj Pandey informed the court that he had withdrawn the contentious title and all related promotional material.

A Bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan took Pandey’s affidavit on record and observed that the matter should now reach a complete resolution, bringing an end to the controversy.

In his affidavit, Pandey stated that while a new title for the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer has not yet been finalised, it would not resemble or evoke the earlier title that had drawn objections.

“While the new title has not yet been finalised, I undertake that any title that may hereafter be identified and adopted shall not be similar to, or evocative of, the earlier title in respect of which objections were raised, and shall accurately reflect the narrative,” the filmmaker said in his submission.

Earlier, on February 12, the top court had expressed strong reservations about the title, remarking that freedom of expression does not permit denigration of any section of society.

The petition before the court had sought a stay on the release of the film on the OTT platform Netflix.

With the withdrawal of the original title and publicity material, the court closed the matter.
