Bathinda: A late-night encounter between police and suspected drug traffickers was reported in Bathinda, resulting in the arrest of five accused, while one suspect sustained a bullet injury during the exchange.

According to SP City Narinder Singh, the police station Kotwali received information that unidentified individuals were consuming and supplying narcotics from a building in the area. The suspects were also allegedly targeting railway passengers at night, robbing them to finance their drug activities.

Acting on the tip-off, a police team led by Inspector Parvinder Singh conducted a raid at the location. During the operation, a suspect identified as Neeraj alias Kala, a resident of Parasram Nagar, allegedly opened fire at the police using a country-made pistol.

In response, the police fired in the air as a warning. During the retaliatory action, one of the accused was shot in the left leg and collapsed at the scene. He was later admitted to Civil Hospital Bathinda for treatment.

The remaining suspects were taken into custody during the operation. Police officials stated that all those arrested are habitual offenders with multiple criminal cases registered against them.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
