Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the regular bail application of suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a bribery case, dealing a significant setback to the senior police officer. Bhullar is currently lodged in the Model Jail in Chandigarh.
According to information available, Bhullar had approached the High Court on January 9 seeking regular bail. In his petition, he argued that the investigation in the case had already been completed and the final report was submitted on December 3 last year. He contended that there was no further requirement for custodial interrogation.
Through his counsel, Nikhil Ghai, the petitioner submitted that the prosecution primarily intended to examine the complainant and official witnesses. It was further argued that since Bhullar had already been suspended from service, there was no likelihood of him influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence.
The petition also stated that the complainant had been provided security under the directions of the High Court. Bhullar maintained that the alleged trap operation was linked to a co-accused and did not involve any direct recovery of money from him or any proven approval on his part.
After considering the submissions, the court declined to grant regular bail. Further proceedings in the matter will continue as per law.
