Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Police chief Ravada Chandrasekhar on Saturday stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarimala gold loss case is in its final phase and progressing in an orderly manner.

Speaking to reporters, Chandrasekhar said the investigation is being conducted under the direct supervision of the Kerala High Court, which continues to closely monitor developments in the matter. He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the probe, noting that the SIT has been carrying out its responsibilities effectively.

“The SIT is doing a good job and the investigation is proceeding properly under the High Court’s supervision,” the Director General of Police said, adding that the team is nearing the conclusion of its inquiry.

The case relates to the alleged disappearance and misappropriation of gold from the Dwarapalaka idols and the Sreekovil door frames at the famed Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple. The issue surfaced following the replating of gold cladding on the artefacts at the hill shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.

The High Court had constituted the SIT to investigate the alleged irregularities and ascertain accountability in connection with the missing gold. The probe covers both the guardian deity idols and the sanctum sanctorum door frames.

So far, the SIT has arrested 12 individuals in connection with the case. Among those taken into custody are the main accused, Unnikrishnan Potty, and two former presidents of the Travancore Devaswom Board, which administers the temple.

Authorities have indicated that further legal steps will follow once the investigation report is finalised and submitted before the court. The outcome of the probe is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged loss and fix responsibility where necessary.
