British Columbia: A deadly shooting at a secondary school in northeastern British Columbia has left eight people dead, including the alleged gunman, in one of the most serious acts of violence to hit the region in recent years. Canadian authorities confirmed on Tuesday that two additional bodies were later discovered at a nearby residence believed to be linked to the same incident.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the attack occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where more than 25 people sustained injuries. Among them, at least two are reported to be in critical condition, while another victim succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote community with a population of around 2,400, located over 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver, close to the Alberta border. The secondary school caters to approximately 175 students from Grades 7 through 12, according to provincial records.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters that the shooter has been identified, but the name has not been made public. He said investigators are still trying to determine what led to the attack and how the victims may be connected to the suspect. “At this stage, we do not yet have clarity on the motive behind this act,” Floyd said, adding that the investigation remains active.
