Delhi: A tragic incident unfolded in Vikaspuri, west Delhi, early Monday when a parked bus caught fire, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old helper, police said.
Authorities received a PCR call at around 12:33 am reporting that a bus parked near Krishi Apartment was ablaze. Patrolling police rushed to the site, attempting to access the vehicle, while two fire tenders were dispatched to control the flames. Once the fire was extinguished, officials discovered the body of a man who had been completely burnt.
The deceased has been identified as Sunil Sharma, a resident of Jharkhand, who worked as a helper on the bus. Police said Sharma reportedly stayed inside the vehicle at night. Preliminary inquiries suggest that he used to light incense sticks while sleeping in the bus to ward off mosquitoes.
The bus, bearing a Haryana registration number, is owned by Vijay Kumar, 46, and was reportedly operating for Uber. Several other buses owned by Kumar were parked nearby, where drivers and helpers commonly rest overnight.
Police noted that there were no immediate indications of foul play. A crime team inspected the site, and Sharma’s body was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital for preservation, with a post-mortem planned.
The investigation is ongoing under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), with authorities examining all possible causes of the fire.
