Chandigarh: A fresh controversy has erupted in Punjab’s music industry following the release of popular Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh’s new song Asla, with a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader accusing the track of glorifying violence and promoting gun culture among youth.
Arvind Sharma, co-convenor of the BJP Punjab Trade Cell, has formally approached Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, raising objections to the song’s content. In his complaint, Sharma alleged that the lyrics and visuals of Asla openly celebrate weapons and could have a negative influence on young listeners. He has urged authorities to take immediate action by banning the song and removing it from YouTube and other digital platforms.
The song, a collaboration between Mankirt Aulakh and music producer Jehr Vibe, was released on February 6 and quickly gained traction online. However, its rapid popularity was accompanied by criticism, as viewers pointed out repeated references to firearms and visuals showcasing guns, despite an official ban in Punjab on songs that glorify weapons.
Sharma argued that such content undermines efforts by the state government and law enforcement agencies to curb violence and substance abuse among youth. He claimed that influential artists carry a responsibility toward society and should avoid messaging that could normalise aggression.
Notably, Mankirt Aulakh has been actively touring various parts of Punjab over the past two weeks to promote the release, further amplifying attention around the song. While the singer and his team have not yet responded publicly to the complaint, the issue has reignited debate over the regulation of music content in Punjab.
The controversy adds to ongoing discussions about artistic freedom versus social responsibility, especially in a state where authorities have repeatedly voiced concerns over the impact of gun-centric music on impressionable audiences. Whether the police act on the complaint or seek changes to the song remains to be seen.
