Chandigarh: The Election Commission of India is likely to carry out a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Officials have confirmed that the revision process is expected to begin during February and March, with preparatory work already underway across the state.
Even before the formal launch of the revision, groundwork has started at the administrative level. Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer has issued directions to district election officers to identify and correct discrepancies in the voter lists. The move aims to ensure accuracy and reliability of electoral data well in advance of the polls.
According to official sources, the decision was discussed during a virtual meeting held by the Election Commission of India with election officials from all states. During the meeting, the Commission directed that a special revision of voter lists in Punjab should be undertaken early next year. Acting on these instructions, the Punjab election authorities have ordered immediate steps to improve the overall quality of the electoral rolls.
As part of this exercise, Booth Level Officers will be responsible for correcting errors in voter information. From now until February 3, BLOs have been relieved of their routine departmental duties for five days to focus exclusively on this task. During this period, they will rectify mistakes made while preparing colour voter lists.
Several issues have been identified in the existing rolls, including black-and-white photographs instead of colour images, blurred or tilted photos, and typographical errors in names and personal details. BLOs have been instructed to correct all such discrepancies within the stipulated time frame to ensure clean and accurate voter records.
The Special Intensive Revision is considered crucial as it focuses on adding the names of newly eligible voters, removing names of deceased or relocated voters, and eliminating duplicate entries. The process is aimed at correcting errors in the electoral rolls and removing fake or ineligible voters, thereby strengthening the integrity of the electoral process in Punjab.
Voters can also check their names online in the electoral roll through the Election Commission’s official website. By visiting electoralsearch.eci.gov.in and selecting the Special Intensive Revision option, voters can search using their EPIC number or name. Once verified, details such as district, assembly constituency, and polling booth information will be displayed.
