Gurdaspur: Continuous downpours in Jammu’s hilly terrain and steady rainfall across the plains have pushed the water level of the Ravi river to a critical point, prompting the district administration to issue a flood alert.

Officials have cautioned residents, urging them to stay away from the riverbanks. Communities settled in the low-lying belt between the Dhussi dam and the river have been specifically instructed to relocate to safer ground without delay.

According to administration sources, the heavy inflow from the Uj and Jalalia rivers has added significant volume to the Ravi, creating flood-like conditions. Presently, the river is carrying over 1.5 lakh cusecs of water. Authorities added that this surge has been intensified by excess water from local drains, marking the season’s first major flood threat.

To prevent any mishap, announcements are being relayed through loudspeakers at religious and public gathering spots across the border villages. The Gujjar community, residing in temporary camps close to the riverbank, has also been advised to evacuate immediately.

The district administration confirmed that dedicated monitoring teams have been deployed along vulnerable points. Citizens are being asked to remain vigilant, cooperate with officials, and contact the helpline immediately in the event of an emergency.
