Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 27-year-old daily-wage labourer within 12 hours of the fatal stabbing of a college professor at a crowded railway station in Mumbai, an official said on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Omkar Eknath Shinde, a resident of the Kurar area in the western suburbs. He was apprehended by the Borivali GRP in connection with the murder that took place on Saturday evening at Malad railway station.

According to police, the incident occurred following a minor argument between the victim, Alok Kumar Singh, a professor at NM College, and Shinde while they were getting down from a local train. The altercation escalated moments later on platform number one.

Police said Shinde, who works as a metal polishing labourer, allegedly stabbed Singh in the stomach before fleeing the scene, leaving the professor critically injured and bleeding on the platform.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Taking advantage of the rush at the station, the accused managed to escape initially. However, police identified him using CCTV footage from the station premises and tracked him down within hours, the official said.

Shinde has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation into the case is ongoing.
