Dehradun: Doon Medical College has taken strict disciplinary action against nine MBBS students for allegedly ragging and assaulting junior students inside the hostel, officials said on Monday.

The action followed an inquiry conducted by the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee, which found students from the 2023 and 2024 batches guilty of attacking two juniors on January 12. Based on the committee’s recommendations, the college administration imposed suspensions, hostel expulsions and monetary penalties.

According to officials, two senior students have been suspended from attending classes for two months and expelled from the hostel and internship facilities for the remainder of their course. They have also been fined ₹50,000 each. Seven other students involved in the incident have been suspended from classes for one month and barred from the hostel for three months.

The inquiry report has been submitted to the college principal, Dr Geeta Jain, who said the institution follows a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging. She reiterated that Doon Medical College is committed to maintaining a safe and disciplined campus environment.

Uttarakhand Medical and Medical Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat described the incident as deeply unfortunate and said strict instructions were issued to ensure a thorough probe. He added that strong action was necessary to send a clear message that ragging would not be tolerated in educational institutions.

The minister further stated that such incidents undermine discipline and order in campuses and assured that the government would continue to enforce stringent measures to prevent ragging in the future.
