Cloud Bursts in Himachal Pradesh Trigger Flooding in Punjab’s Beas River Basin

Kapurthala: Persistent rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, coupled with cloud burst incidents in certain regions, has led to a surge in the water level of the Beas River, bringing challenges to nearby areas in Punjab.

In Kapurthala district, the swelling river breached a temporary embankment in the Mand region of Sultanpur Lodhi, leaving 22 villages submerged. Responding to the situation, the local administration has urged residents of low-lying areas to move to the relief camp established in Sultanpur Lodhi.

According to Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal, essential arrangements, including food, clean drinking water, medicines, and other necessities, have been put in place. Medical teams are on standby to handle emergencies, while officials are closely monitoring the flood-hit zones using both physical inspections and drone surveillance.

For assistance, the administration has issued a helpline number — 01822-231-990 — for residents in need.

Meanwhile, a section of the Pathankot–Dalhousie–Chamba national highway, previously washed away by torrential rain, has been reopened for light vehicles. Heavy vehicle movement will remain prohibited until further notice. While reports indicate rising water levels in both the Beas and Satluj rivers, authorities maintain that the situation is currently under control.
