Mumbai: Italian luxury fashion house Prada has once again caught India’s attention with the launch of its tea-inspired fragrance, Infusion de Santal Chai Eau de Parfum, sparking curiosity and conversation across social media platforms.
The unisex perfume has been introduced as part of Prada’s Les Infusions collection and draws inspiration from chai, a beverage deeply woven into everyday Indian life. According to the brand, the fragrance combines creamy sandalwood with spicy chai latte accords, layered with hints of citrus and cardamom to create a warm, woody and aromatic profile.
The visual presentation of the perfume echoes its concept. It comes in a brown-toned glass bottle, topped with Prada’s signature camel-coloured Saffiano cap, reflecting the comforting hues of freshly brewed tea.
Soon after its launch, the fragrance became a talking point online, with users expressing excitement and amusement over the idea of a high-end “chai” perfume. Several comments highlighted the cultural resonance of chai, while others saw it as another example of Indian traditions influencing global luxury brands.
The launch has also revived memories of Prada’s earlier engagement with Indian heritage. In 2025, the brand faced legal scrutiny after a public interest litigation was filed in the Bombay High Court, alleging similarities between Prada’s summer footwear collection and traditional Kolhapuri chappals. The controversy later led to dialogue and collaboration.
Subsequently, Prada representatives visited India to study the history and craftsmanship of Kolhapuri footwear. In December, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Maharashtra’s LIDCOM and Karnataka’s LIDKAR to formally collaborate on the project titled “Prada Made in India — Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals.” The initiative aims to blend traditional Indian shoemaking techniques with contemporary design elements.
With its chai-inspired perfume, Prada appears to continue its engagement with Indian culture, translating familiar flavours and traditions into the language of global luxury.
