Bathinda: Today is being seen as a crucial day in the defamation case involving BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut. As per the court’s order, Kangana is required to appear in person today, which has once again intensified political and legal discussions around the case.

During the previous hearing, Kangana Ranaut did not appear personally in court, and her counsel represented her. At that time, she had sought exemption from personal appearance, citing her engagement in a Parliament session. The court accepted her request and fixed January 5, 2026, as the next date of hearing.

The defamation case has been filed by an elderly woman, Mahinder Kaur. Appearing on her behalf, advocate Ranveer Singh Beniwal told the court that it had already clearly directed Kangana to appear in person on the next date. The court has also issued guidelines regarding the recording of witness statements and directed that prior information must be given if additional witnesses are to be summoned.

Controversy Linked to Farmers’ Protest
The controversy dates back to the period when farmers were staging protests in Delhi against the central government’s farm laws. During that time, a tweet by Kangana Ranaut sparked widespread outrage. In the tweet, she allegedly identified 87-year-old farmer Mahinder Kaur, a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandia village in Bathinda, as a woman who participated in the protest for money.

Mahinder Kaur termed the tweet as defamatory and damaging to her dignity and reputation, following which she approached the court. The matter has since taken the legal route and has now reached an important stage in the Bathinda court.

With today’s hearing, the case has gained further significance, as it involves not only legal issues but also broader social and political sensitivities.
