New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a Nepalese national and seized nearly 11 kilograms of charas valued at more than ₹1 crore in the international market, officials said on Sunday.

The arrest was made in the Amar Colony area following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of a drug trafficker allegedly involved in supplying narcotics in the national capital. Acting on the tip-off, a police team laid a trap on January 1 and kept the area under surveillance.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari, the suspect was identified by an informer at around 6.50 pm and intercepted while carrying a bag. A search of the bag led to the recovery of multiple polythene packets containing charas. The total weight of the seized contraband was found to be close to 11 kilograms.

The accused has been identified as Mahesh, 46, a resident of Nepal’s Rolpa district. He was arrested on the spot and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Mahesh was allegedly involved in the regular transportation and delivery of narcotics from Nepal to Delhi. Police believe he may be part of a larger inter-state and international drug trafficking network supplying contraband to peddlers and consumers in the city.

During interrogation, the accused reportedly told investigators that he entered the narcotics trade for quick financial gains, despite being aware of the serious legal consequences. Police said further investigation is underway to trace and arrest other members of the syndicate linked to the operation.
