Sangrur: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested a tehsildar posted in Sangrur district on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹30,000. The accused has been identified as Jagatar Singh, while efforts are underway to arrest his accomplice involved in the alleged corruption case.

According to vigilance officials, a sum of ₹1.45 lakh in cash was recovered during a search conducted at the tehsildar’s residence following his arrest. The action was taken after a complaint was filed by a woman resident of a village in Sangrur district.

A spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau said the complainant had approached the bureau alleging that Jagatar Singh, along with clerk Malvinder Singh posted at the Sangrur tehsil office, demanded a bribe for registering land purchased by her. The complainant stated that she contacted the officials for the registration process, during which both accused allegedly demanded ₹30,000 to complete the work.

After a preliminary inquiry, the allegations were found to be prima facie true. Subsequently, the Vigilance Bureau registered a case against both accused under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Patiala Range.

Jagatar Singh was arrested following the registration of the case, while raids are being conducted to apprehend the clerk. Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the corruption and to identify whether more individuals were involved.
