New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment for murdering his mother in a case dating back to 2012. Additional Sessions Judge Babru Bhan pronounced the sentence while hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment after convicting the accused, Ramesh, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on May 15, 2012, in north Delhi’s Vijay Colony, where Ramesh shot his mother, Shanti Devi, dead following a property-related dispute. The court was told that there was no grave provocation or immediate reason that could justify the crime.

Additional Public Prosecutor Ghanshyam strongly opposed any leniency, arguing that the murder was particularly heinous given the close relationship between the accused and the victim. He submitted that the circumstances warranted the maximum punishment under the law.

In its order dated December 15, the court sentenced Ramesh to rigorous imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000. Earlier, on December 6, the court had held that the prosecution successfully proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ramesh had murdered his mother by shooting her with a country-made pistol.
