Agartala: A woman was allegedly beaten and publicly humiliated by a group of villagers in Tripura’s Dhalai district over accusations of an extramarital relationship, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday morning at Harerkhola village under the jurisdiction of Kamalpur police station. According to police, the woman, a mother of two sons, was dragged out of her house by villagers, assaulted, and forced to wear a garland made of shoes.

After receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and found the woman lying on the road. She was immediately shifted to the district hospital in Ambassa, where she underwent a CT scan. Doctors have stated that she is out of danger.

Police have registered a case against several individuals involved in the assault, and an investigation is currently underway. One person has been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

The Tripura Commission for Women strongly condemned the act. TCW chairperson Jharna Debbarma said the incident reflected a serious violation of the law and human dignity.

“We strongly condemn the torture and humiliation of the woman. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” Debbarma said, urging the police to take strict legal action against all those involved.

She added that a team from the commission would visit Kamalpur to meet the victim and ensure that appropriate steps are taken to secure justice.
