Surat: In a miraculous escape, a 57-year-old man survived a fall from the 10th floor of a residential building in Surat after getting trapped in a metal grill installed outside a window on the 8th floor, officials said on Thursday.
The man, identified as Nitin Adiya, was sleeping near a window of his flat at the Times Galaxy building in Surat’s Jahangirabad area when he accidentally slipped and fell early in the morning. His fall was abruptly halted when he got stuck in the metal grill two floors below, leaving him suspended upside down in severe distress.
Fire department officials said Adiya remained trapped for nearly an hour before help arrived. Dramatic visuals of the tense rescue operation later surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.
Following an emergency call received around 8 am, fire teams from Jahangirpura, Palanpur and Adajan rushed to the spot. In a carefully coordinated operation, rescuers used ropes and safety belts from the 10th floor to reach Adiya and pull him safely inside through the front window of the 8th-floor flat.
After the rescue, Adiya was immediately shifted to Gurukrupa Hospital in an ambulance for medical examination. Officials said he survived the incident without life-threatening injuries, calling it an extraordinary stroke of luck.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of window safety in high-rise buildings, especially for residents sleeping close to open windows.
