Mohali (Punjab): A hearing was held on Tuesday at a Mohali court in the disproportionate assets case registered against Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia. However, the court did not frame charges against him at this stage. The process of framing charges is now expected to take place next year, in 2026.
The court has fixed January 3 as the next date of hearing in the case.
The Vigilance Bureau had filed the challan against Majithia in the Mohali court on August 22. As part of its investigation, the bureau cited more than 200 witnesses and submitted a chargesheet running into over 40,000 pages, which was brought to the court in four trunks.
Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau from Amritsar on June 25 on allegations of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Earlier, in 2021, during the tenure of the Congress government in Punjab, a case under the NDPS Act had also been registered against him.
So far, statements of six persons, including former Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya and a former deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate, have been recorded in the case. Raids have been conducted on Majithia’s properties in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
While the state government maintains that it has concrete evidence in the matter, Majithia’s legal counsel has termed the case politically motivated and baseless.
Meanwhile, Majithia has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail after the High Court, with the apex court scheduled to hear the matter on January 19.
