Amritsar / Auckland, December 21, 2025: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has voiced serious concern over opposition to a peaceful Nagar Kirtan procession in New Zealand, describing the incident as a threat to global social harmony.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dhami said Sikh religious traditions are firmly grounded in peace, tolerance and the welfare of all humanity. He termed any attempt to obstruct or oppose such sacred religious events as deeply condemnable and against the spirit of coexistence.

The SGPC president urged the governments of both New Zealand and India to take the matter seriously and ensure a safe, respectful environment in which Sikhs can freely practise and observe their religious traditions. Stressing the importance of multicultural values, Dhami said religious freedom and mutual respect are defining pillars of democratic and diverse societies.

He further stated that incidents targeting religious processions not only hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community but also weaken the spirit of unity and harmony that countries like New Zealand are globally recognised for.
