Kochi: Kerala Police have suspended Circle Inspector K G Prathapachandran after CCTV footage surfaced showing the assault of a pregnant woman inside the Ernakulam North Police Station in 2024.

Southern Range Inspector General Shyam Sunder ordered the immediate suspension following public outrage triggered by the release of the visuals. At the time of the incident, Prathapachandran was serving as the Station House Officer of the Ernakulam North Police Station. He is currently posted as Circle Inspector at Aroor.

The CCTV footage was handed over to the complainants on the directions of the Kerala High Court. The visuals reportedly show a young pregnant woman being assaulted inside the police station, leading to serious questions over custodial conduct and police accountability.

After the footage became public and sparked widespread criticism, senior police officials initiated disciplinary action. The suspension has been ordered pending a detailed inquiry into the incident.

Police officials confirmed that Prathapachandran will remain under suspension until the completion of the internal investigation, as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.

The case has intensified scrutiny of custodial practices in the state and renewed calls for strict action against police misconduct.
