India Restricts Import of Select Jute Products from Bangladesh to Single Port

New Delhi: India has imposed immediate restrictions on the import of specific jute products and ropes from Bangladesh, permitting their entry only through the Nhava Sheva Seaport in Maharashtra, according to a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued on Monday.e

The restricted items include bleached and unbleached woven jute fabrics, twine, cordage, ropes, and sacks and bags made of jute. This measure builds on earlier restrictions announced on June 27, which banned the import of raw jute fiber, yarn, and certain woven fabrics via land ports.

Officials said the move aims to tighten quality checks and curb alleged unfair trade practices. Importing through a single designated seaport is expected to streamline inspections and compliance monitoring.

The decision comes amid deteriorating India–Bangladesh relations, further strained by recent remarks from Bangladesh’s interim government leader Muhammad Yunus during his visit to China.

In FY 2024–25, India imported goods worth nearly $2 billion from Bangladesh, with jute products forming a significant share of the trade.
