Ordinary Bystanders Remembered for Extraordinary Courage in Bondi Beach Attack

Sydney: As Australia continues to grapple with the shock of the deadly attack near Bondi Beach, tributes are growing for several civilians who lost their lives while trying to stop the violence and protect others. Among them are an older couple and another man who, witnesses say, confronted the attackers head-on rather than fleeing to safety.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese identified the couple as Boris and Sofia Gurman, both in their 60s. They were killed after intervening as one of the assailants exited his vehicle. Video footage circulating online shows an older man grappling with a gunman moments after the shooting began. The two struggle violently before collapsing to the ground near a parked car.

Further aerial footage later captured the couple lying still beside the vehicle, close to a pedestrian bridge where police ultimately shot the attackers.

The footage was recorded on a dashcam and later shared online by its owner, identified only as Jenny. Writing on the Chinese social media platform RedNote, she described watching the man rush toward danger rather than retreat.

“He didn’t try to escape,” she wrote. “He ran straight at the gunman, using everything he had to stop him. Seeing him fall after being shot was heartbreaking.”

According to reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, Boris and Sofia were Russian-Jewish immigrants. Boris had retired after working as a mechanic, while Sofia was employed by Australia Post. In a statement to the newspaper, their family said their grief was matched by pride in the couple’s actions.

“Nothing can ease the loss,” the family said, “but their courage and selflessness will always define how they are remembered.”

The Gurmans were among 15 people killed in what authorities say is the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in nearly three decades. Investigators allege the attack was carried out by a father and son and are treating it as terrorism, saying it appeared to deliberately target the Jewish community and may have been influenced by Islamic State ideology.

Another victim, 62-year-old Reuven Morrison, was also killed after attempting to disrupt the attackers. His daughter, Sheina Gutnick, told CBS News that her father reacted instantly when gunfire erupted.

“He didn’t hesitate,” she said. “He started throwing bricks, yelling at the terrorist, doing everything he could to protect people.”

Video clips shared on social media appear to show Morrison chasing one of the attackers and throwing objects at him. Gutnick said her father, who emigrated from the former Soviet Union, was later shot and killed.

“If there was ever a way my dad would want to leave this world,” she said, “it would be standing up to a terrorist.”

Morrison’s actions occurred shortly after another bystander, 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, tackled one of the gunmen from behind and managed to disarm him. Ahmed, a Muslim father of two, was shot during the confrontation and remains in hospital recovering from his injuries. A fundraising campaign set up to support him and his family has raised more than A$2.4 million.

While the nation mourns the victims of the attack, the stories emerging from Bondi Beach have also highlighted acts of remarkable bravery by ordinary people — individuals who, in a moment of terror, chose to protect others at the cost of their own lives.
