Chandigarh – Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains has announced that the state government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a modification of the July 14, 2025 court order. The petition requests permission for 1,158 assistant professors and librarians appointed in government colleges to continue in their positions for the time being.

Bains stated that the move aims to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar and ensure continuity in higher education. He cautioned that, “If such a large number of teaching and library staff are removed at once, it will not only affect the quality of education but will also directly impact students’ learning.”

He further added that, along with appealing to the Supreme Court for interim relief, the state government is also exploring other legal options to safeguard the interests of both students and staff. “Our goal is to find a solution that is legally sound while also protecting the interests of education,” Bains assured.

Education experts believe that a sudden shortage of faculty could lead to reduced course offerings and put additional pressure on the existing staff. The Supreme Court’s decision will now determine how Punjab’s government colleges will be run in the coming period.
