Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal has announced that he will contest the 2027 Assembly election from Gidderbaha. He said the people of Gidderbaha have been urging him to represent the constituency. Until now, Sukhbir Badal has contested elections from Jalalabad. He won the Jalalabad bypoll in 2009 and later secured victories from the same seat in 2012 and 2017.
However, in the 2022 Assembly election, he lost the Jalalabad seat. Former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Badal’s father, had also contested elections from Gidderbaha in the past. Although Lambi is considered a stronghold of the Badal family, Parkash Singh Badal lost the seat in the previous election.
Gidderbaha is currently represented by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Raja Warring. In the last by-election, he fielded his wife Amruta Warring from the constituency, but she was defeated.
Lambi is the family’s traditional seat, but it remains uncertain who will contest from there in the next election. Sukhbir Badal’s wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, may also be a possible candidate from Lambi, although she is currently a Member of Parliament. If she does not contest the Assembly polls, Sukhbir Badal could choose to stand from both Lambi and Gidderbaha in 2027.
