Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday reaffirmed that her party remains committed solely to protecting Punjab’s interests and will not enter or exit any political alliance unless it benefits the state.
“We are committed to Punjab alone. The Akali Dal has no interest in forming or breaking alliances for political gain,” Badal said. “We will join hands only with a party that ensures Punjab receives what it rightfully deserves.”
Her statement came a day after former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh recommended reviving the Akali–BJP alliance, arguing that such a partnership would be necessary if the parties hope to form the government in 2027.
The remarks triggered sharp political reactions. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused Captain Amarinder of acting as a “BJP agent,” saying his comments only reinforced suspicions about his political leanings.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also criticised the former CM, claiming his statement confirms what people already believed. “Everyone in Punjab knows the BJP has no political future here. Perhaps it took him some time to understand that, but it’s obvious now,” Warring said.
