Centre Clarifies No Bill on Chandigarh Administration Planned for Winter Session

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday clarified that the Central government has no plan to introduce any bill related to Chandigarh’s administration in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, easing speculation and political unrest triggered in Punjab over the past few days.

In an official statement, the MHA said that the ongoing proposal aims only to streamline the law-making process for the Union Territory and is still at the examination stage within the Central government. The ministry emphasised that no final decision has been made, and therefore no bill will be brought to Parliament at this time.

The clarification comes amid strong political reactions in Punjab, where parties across the spectrum had opposed the possibility of Chandigarh being brought under Article 240 through a constitutional amendment.

The MHA’s statement is expected to calm the heated debate surrounding the Union Territory’s administrative future, even as discussions on simplifying legislative procedures for Chandigarh continue at the central level.
