Mass Death of Blackbucks at Belagavi Zoo Triggers Urgent Probe

Belagavi(Karnataka): Twenty-eight blackbucks have died under unexplained circumstances at the Kittur Rani Chennamma Zoo over the past three days, prompting authorities to launch an urgent investigation. The zoo originally had 38 blackbucks, making the sudden loss of most of the herd a major cause for alarm.

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre ordered a detailed probe into the incident, expressing deep concern over the scale and speed of the deaths. According to Assistant Conservator of Forests Nagaraj Balhasuri, eight blackbucks died two days ago, followed by 20 more on Saturday.

The zoo’s veterinary doctor suspects a possible bacterial infection, although the exact cause is yet to be determined. “We have sent viscera samples to Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru to identify the precise cause,” Balhasuri said.

The Forest Minister noted that preliminary reports point to an infectious disease. He assured that precautionary measures have been taken to protect other animals in the zoo from potential exposure.

Khandre directed the formation of an expert committee to examine whether the deaths were linked to contaminated food or water, or if the infection was transmitted by domestic animals such as cats. He also warned that strict action would follow if any negligence by zoo staff is found.

“It is disturbing to see animals dying in this manner. Such incidents must not be repeated, and accountability will be enforced if any lapses are established,” he said.
