Jakarta— At least 54 people, mostly students, were injured after multiple explosions shook a mosque inside a high school during Friday prayers in Indonesia’s capital, police said.

The blasts occurred around midday at the mosque of SMA 27, a state-run high school located within a navy compound in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Witnesses reported hearing at least two loud explosions just as the sermon began, triggering chaos as smoke filled the mosque and people rushed out in panic.

According to Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri, the blasts appeared to originate near the mosque’s loudspeaker system. Most victims suffered injuries ranging from minor cuts to severe wounds caused by flying glass shards.

Emergency teams quickly evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals. While several people were discharged after treatment, 20 students remain hospitalized, with three in serious condition, Suheri confirmed.

An anti-bomb squad deployed to the site discovered toy rifles and a toy gun near the mosque, though the connection between these items and the explosions remains unclear.

Police have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released.

“Let the authorities work first,” Suheri stated. “We will share the investigation results once confirmed.”
