Chandigarh— In a significant reversal, the Central Government has withdrawn its earlier notification that dissolved the Panjab University Senate, restoring the institution’s top governing body.
The decision comes after intense criticism from academic circles, political leaders, and student organizations, who had denounced the dissolution as unconstitutional and a direct assault on the university’s autonomy.
Earlier, the Punjab Government had announced plans to challenge the Centre’s move in the High Court, arguing that it sought to weaken the state’s administrative role in Panjab University’s governance.
The withdrawal of the notification has been widely seen as a victory for academic independence and state rights, marking an important moment in the ongoing debate over university autonomy in India.
