Trump Blames GOP Election Losses on His Absence and Government Shutdown as Democrats Celebrate Big Wins

Washington— U.S. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Tuesday to comment on the Republican Party’s disappointing election performance, attributing the losses to two main factors — his absence from the ballot and the ongoing government shutdown.

“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters,” Trump wrote on his platform, claiming widespread agreement among political analysts about the reasons behind the GOP’s poor showing.

The remarks came after a series of major Democratic victories, most notably in New York City, where 34-year-old Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani made history as the city’s youngest and first Muslim mayor. Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in a contest that saw a record voter turnout of more than two million. His win, observers say, underscores the shifting political mood in one of America’s largest cities.

During his victory speech, Mamdani thanked supporters and declared, “The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.” He added, “Tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford.” Mamdani will be sworn in as mayor on January 1.

Meanwhile, in his concession speech, Cuomo congratulated Mamdani and urged New Yorkers to unite behind the new administration. “We need our New York City government to work for all New Yorkers, because our city is the greatest in the world,” he said.

Democrats also celebrated victories in gubernatorial races across New Jersey and Virginia, cementing what many analysts are calling a “blue wave” night.

Trump, who previously warned that federal funding to New York could be “at risk” if Mamdani won, referred to the new mayor-elect as a “Communist lunatic” and “a disaster waiting to happen.” Despite his criticism, the White House posted on X (formerly Twitter), reminding Americans that Trump remains the sitting president.
