Phnom Penh— Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him for his role in brokering the historic Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords signed between Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday, The Sun reported.
The landmark agreement marks a major step toward ending years of military and territorial tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours. President Trump attended the signing ceremony, where both sides formalized an expanded ceasefire and pledged to pursue lasting peace and regional stability.
“The nomination reflects the gratitude of the Cambodian people for President Trump’s decisive leadership and commitment to peace,” Hun Sen said during his address at the event. He hailed Trump’s diplomatic intervention and firm stance as pivotal in resolving the long-standing border conflict that has strained relations for years.
Under the terms of the accord, Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners held during the recent border clashes, while Cambodia has agreed to withdraw its heavy artillery from the frontier as part of the first phase of demilitarization.
Diplomatic observers have described the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords as one of the most significant peace initiatives in Southeast Asia in recent years, attributing its success to Trump’s mediation and economic pressure on both sides to de-escalate tensions.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for enhanced cross-border cooperation, trade, and joint infrastructure projects between the two nations, marking a new era of stability in the region.
