At Least 30 Killed as Passenger Truck Crashes in Northern Nigeria

Kano: A deadly road accident in northern Nigeria claimed the lives of at least 30 people after a truck carrying passengers and goods lost control and crashed early Sunday, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred along a major highway near Kwanar Barde town in the Gezawa local government area of Kano State. According to information released by the Kano State government, the trailer was en route to Gujungu when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash.

Several others sustained injuries in the accident, many of them serious, and were rushed to hospitals across the area for emergency treatment. Authorities said medical teams are continuing to monitor the condition of the injured.

In a statement issued by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state government described the incident as devastating and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The governor noted that the tragedy represents a significant loss for the affected communities and the state as a whole.

Nigeria continues to witness frequent fatal road accidents, particularly involving heavy vehicles transporting both goods and passengers. Poor road infrastructure, overloading and weak enforcement of traffic regulations have long been cited as contributing factors.

Following Sunday’s crash, state officials renewed calls for motorists to comply strictly with traffic rules, warning that reckless driving would attract stiff penalties. Authorities said stronger enforcement measures are necessary to prevent similar tragedies.

The latest incident adds to a growing list of fatal crashes across the country, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety in Africa’s most populous nation.
