Jakarta: India’s campaign at the USD 500,000 Indonesia Masters Super 500 badminton tournament came to an end on Friday after P V Sindhu and Lakshya Sen suffered straight-game defeats in their respective quarterfinal matches.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu bowed out of the women’s singles after losing 13-21, 17-21 to top seed and world number four Chen Yu Fei of China in a 42-minute contest. With this loss, Sindhu now trails Chen 6-8 in their head-to-head record, with her last victory over the Chinese shuttler dating back to 2019.
In the men’s singles quarterfinals, Lakshya Sen was edged out by Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul in a tightly contested match that lasted 46 minutes. The Indian shuttler went down 18-21, 20-22 against the 21-year-old Thai, who had earlier stunned Paris Olympics bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the pre-quarterfinals.
India’s challenge had already weakened on Thursday, with Kidambi Srikanth and Anmol Kharb exiting the men’s and women’s singles competitions respectively. The men’s doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M R Arjun also bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals.
With no Indian representation left in any category, the country’s campaign concluded at the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.
