Chandigarh: In a notable political shift in Punjab, the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has faced a setback as senior leader Arvind Khanna switched allegiance to the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Khanna, who was serving as BJP Vice President in Sangrur, formally joined the Akali Dal in the presence of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. In a significant gesture, Badal visited Khanna’s residence in Sangrur to induct him into the party fold.
The development is being seen as an important boost for the Akali Dal in the region, while posing organisational challenges for the BJP in Sangrur. Party leaders have yet to issue detailed statements regarding the move.
Political observers note that such shifts could influence local dynamics ahead of upcoming electoral contests in the state.
